ABENA will participate as part of the business delegation to France accompanied by the Danish Crown Prince Couple on October 6-8, 2019. The goal is to strengthen the close ties between the French market and ABENA’s innovative health care solutions.

Focus on innovative health care

ABENA Nova, the world’s first digital incontinence aid for everyday use, is currently being introduced to the French market through a series of trials in French nursing homes.

ABENA Nova: The world’s first digital incontinence aid for everyday use

With a mission of improving quality of life and dignity for people living with incontinence, ABENA Nova fuses the clinical expertise and the high-quality manufacturing of incontinence products from ABENA with the innovative wearable sensor technology of MediSens Wireless.

Ongoing case studies have shown that successful implementation of ABENA Nova results in less unnecessary changes, less time in a wet product and improved skin conditions, among others. This means more time for quality care and improved working conditions for caregivers.

Results have been demonstrated through a series of trials throughout Europe, including Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and the US, and ongoing launches in Australia, Japan and France.

Innovative solutions for a more sustainable tomorrow

Our needs as individuals and health care providers are changing. The healthcare sector faces challenges of multi-resistant bacteria and a growing population over the age of 80.  With more than 50 years of experience in health care, ABENA has seen this change first-hand. It is more important than ever to keep our focus on the needs of tomorrow’s essential healthcare needs and to continually challenge the way we approach innovation in health care.

“Being innovative is a part of our company DNA. Our business and product range must follow market trends as well as digital developments. This is the reason for investing in unique solutions such as ABENA Nova,

Preben Terp-Nielsen, CEO of ABENA

More than 30 years of French cooperation

France is the world’s 6th largest economy with a population of about 66 million. Often characterized by a modern and innovative lifestyle and economy, ABENA already has strong business ties to France. ABENA-Frantex, ABENA’s French subsidiary, became a part of the Abena group in 1992, but has been producing absorbent products for the ABENA group since 1988.

ABENA’s production lines in France were recently expanded in a large-scale venture investment; further proof of ABENA’s commitment to the French market. With these new investments in state-of-the art production lines, ABENA-Frantex is now able to produce more than 500 pieces per minute, or 135 million per year, with automatic quality control.

The new production machines are specially designed to produce innovative products for the health-care sector. In addition, they exemplify ABENA’s long-standing ambition to supply health-care solutions where ethics, environment, and innovation go hand-in-hand for the good of patients and caregivers around the world.

“We want to continue developing and providing innovative solutions to users of incontinence products so that their quality of life is not diminished because of incontinence”, said Olivier Barbet-Maillot, Président Directeur Général, ABENA Frantex.

Kate Granger Award for Compassionate Care

ABENA wins

‘Kate Granger Award for Compassionate Care’ for the intelligent continence solution ABENA Nova with MediSens

Wednesday, June 12 2019

ABENA wins European Care Award ‘Kate Granger Award for Compassionate Care’ for the intelligent continence solution ABENA Nova.

European award for the care of tomorrow

Aabenraa, Denmark – ABENA received this European award for the digital continence solution ‘ABENA Nova with MediSens’, with which it also won the National Innovation Award last year.

ABENA was nominated for the Kate Granger Award by the manager of the health-care institution Evean Oostergouw. The institution implemented ABENA Nova in one of its nursing homes in 2018 and here, the number of wet beds decreased by 76% due to the intelligent continence solution. At the same time, the implementation resulted in a 30% reduction in work pressure. Thus, the average number of changes went down from 3.5 to 2.4 per resident per day.

ABENA Nova contributes to a solution for the staff shortages in health care – one of the biggest problems of this time. Moreover, a 20% cost saving was measured on continence care, as well as a time saving of 28 %. Due to these results, Evean Oostergouw was proclaimed ‘Career Innovator 2019’ by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Netherlands in January.

International recognition for compassionate care

The Kate Granger Awards are named after the English doctor, Dr. Kate Granger, who committed herself to more compassionate and patient-centered care, after being diagnosed with cancer herself. ABENA won the prize in the category “team/organization”. The award was presented by Secretary-General of VWS Erik Gerritsen. The other awards were awarded in the categories “individual” (won by Fleur Kapka, midwife at the Barnsley hospital in England) and “best use of innovation” (won by Galway Clinic’s nurses in Ireland). The ceremony took place during the International Care Conference HIMSS Europe in Helsinki, Finland.

Great impact on people’s well-being

The use of ABENA Nova has a great impact on the well-being of residents in nursing homes and other institutions, explains CEO of the ABENA Group, Preben Terp-Nielsen: “By avoiding wet clothing and wet beds, the intelligent continence solution ensures that people experience less discomfort and shame. And this goes hand-in-hand with our mission: to improve quality of life for people living with incontinence.”

You don’t want to stimulate people who are restless by taking them to the toilet unnecessarily. And for bedridden residents, unnecessary changes can lead to defensive behavior through shame, sadness, or anger.”

Ine van Gestel, Caregiver and NOVA ambassador at ZGEM

Relief of work pressure in health care

The use of the digital continence solution relieves work pressure in the care sector. “Coping with incontinence among residents is a great burden for health care professionals,” explains Katja Kääriä, director of ABEA Finland. “Reducing unnecessary changes is a direct reduction of that physical workload. Care professionals also gain valuable time, which they are able to spend on other important care tasks.”

ABENA is a Danish family-owned production and commerce company with over 1,800 employees worldwide, based in Aabenaa in Denmark.

Award for implementation of ABENA Nova

Implementing ABENA Nova

Dutch nursing homes wins award for implementation

Wednesday, January 23 2019

The Dutch nursing homes Evean and Philadelphia Care have been named winners of the Dutch ‘Nursing homes of the future’ challenge.

‘Nursing homes of the future’ challenge

Dutch nursing homes Evean and Philadelphia Care have been named winners of the Dutch ‘Nursing homes of the future’ challenge as a part of ‘Care Innovator 2019’.

This was announced Monday by Dutch Secretary-General Erik Gerritsen of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport during the Healthcare & E-Health conference in The Hague, Netherlands.

The award was given by an independent jury based on the results of the successful implementation of the intelligent continence aid ‘ABENA Nova with MediSens’ at Evean Oostergouw nursing home in Zaandam, NL. For the project, Evean had partnered with Philadelphia Care, another nursing home in the Netherlands which has already successfully implemented ABENA Nova with MediSens.

Intelligent continence aid with sensors and real-time data

ABENA Nova with MediSens is equipped with digital sensors and wireless connection that continuously registers changes in wetness levels of the incontinence products. This information is shared in real-time with caregivers via the ABENA Nova app on their mobile device. This helps caretakers be able to change the residents’ incontinence products at exactly the right time.

Test results: fewer wet beds, decreased workload*

A total of 12 residents participated in the Evean Oostergouw challenge. During the test period with the intelligent continence aid, the number of wet beds at Evean decreased by 76%. It also led to a reduction of the overall workload. The average number of  product changes went from 3.5  to 2.4 per resident per day; a decrease of 30%.

According to Nicole Bring, Employee Care and Quality of Evean, these changes have a major impact on quality of life for both residents and employees, “Residents no longer need to lie in a wet and cold bed, and now experience less shame and unrest. Employees have less work changing clothes and bedding. This not only saves time, but is also a relief in terms of physical strain.”

20% cost savings, 28% time savings*

On an annual basis, a net cost saving of € 46,000 and a time saving of 1,609 hours of continence care were measured for this trial group consisting of 12 residents; equivalent to 20 % and 28 % respectively.

“Euros and hours that we can now spend on all sorts of other valuable things”, says Ester van Holk, Location Manager Oostergouw. “And of course, it is also very relevant in view of the current labor market situation. Just like all other institutions in the health-care sector, we can use every hour of every employee very well.”

Collaboration with partner for successful implementation

Throughout the implementation, Evean paid a lot of attention to the challenge of cultural change.

“At first glance, an intelligent continence aid may not be too complex an innovation to implement, while the benefits are obvious. But you are asking employees to start working in a new way. A person-centered approach replaces fixed product changes and existing routines. That is why we have involved employees intensively in the entire process, and looked at how we could best facilitate each team.”

In the ‘Nursing homes of the future’ challenge, the focus was not just on implementing the technological innovation, but on being able to integrate the innovation into the daily work of the staff. In order to successfully do this, each participant in the challenge was expected to form a partnership with an organization who had already successfully implemented the technology.

For Evean, that partner was Philadephia Zorg: “Philadelphia put us in contact with ABENA and supported us throughout the entire process,” explains Nicole Brink. “We have been grateful for the experience and advice from Philadelphia. For example, that we must pay constant attention to the teams working on the floor, so that the employees can quickly and easily ask for help and be encouraged in the work.”

“Euros and hours that we can now spend on all sorts of other valuable things”

Ester van Holk, Location Manager Oostergouw.

    The continence care of tomorrow

With ABENA Nova, caregivers are provided with real-time actionable data that help them time every-day care activities to the individual resident. Incontinence products are changed exactly when they need to be changed.

The result is caregivers who are able to learn more about a resident’s behavior over time, and empowering them to improve general procedures based on actionable insights.

Lastly, the many sensors in the incontinence product registers every detail about where in the product the urine is detected and how it spreads in the incontinence product. This is information the manufacturer can use to develop and optimize the incontinence products.
